Mount Desert Island High School Habitat Club
MDIHS teachers Todd West and Bruce Munger contacted us about the possibility of teaching a building class involving Habitat for Humanity approximately two years ago.
In the winter of 2007, the Mount Desert Island High School Habitat Club was formed involving twenty students meeting weekly after school. The club has been an inspiration to members of Hancock County Habitat for Humanity. These young people have a strong sense of community and are interested in learning about fundraising, family selection, and what it takes to build a house. Habitat representatives have been working with the club to give guidance to understand the purpose of out organization.
The effective leadership of Bruce Munger and Wilton Jones has served to guide the students in understanding what it takes to plan to build a house. The high school class began in January 2008. They are currently building outside wall panels for the Otis house and will move on to the Rumill house when finished.
One student and club member, Ashley Bartlett, involved her dad, Duane, who has now become a member of our board.

Maine Innkeepers Fundraiser
Four years ago, the Maine Innkeepers Association designed a fundraiser, "Hospitality for Habitat" inspired by Marian Burns, owner of Mira Monte Inn and Suites in Bar Harbor.
The innkeepers raised $4,390 in 2005. In 2006, forty-nine MEIA member properties participated, booking over 250 rooms under the program and raised $5,500. In 2007, 31 inns around the State of Maine participated raising $6,000 in 18 days.
Hancock County Habitat for Humanity is very grateful to Greg Dugal, Executive Director of MEIA, and their board of directors, the participating innkeepers, Portland Habitat for Humanity for administering the funds collected and for all the good folks that visited the inns. Maine Innkeepers Association is giving back to our communities.
The fifth annual "Hospitality for Habitat" will be held between May 1st and 23rd. Participating member properties will offer a designated number of their rooms at half the regular rate, in exchange for a $35 check payable to Habitat for Humanity.
Visit www.maineinns.com to find a participating inn in your area.
