Our home for Sonia is nearly ready for her to move in! Thank you to all of the volunteers and donors who turned this dream into reality for Sonia. Sonia will benefit from an affordable mortgage for years to come, while living in a home that is both beautiful and energy-efficient. Just like Sonia, the place is small but mighty!

Supporting Older Adults at Home: Hancock County Habitat for Humanity Becomes Community Aging in Place Provider

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity is proud to announce its new role as a Community Aging in Place provider through the Maine State Housing Authority. This designation highlights an important aspect of our mission—helping older adults in Hancock County remain safely and comfortably in their homes as they age.

Through this program, we now offer safety and accessibility modifications—such as grab bars, handrails, addressing trip and fall hazards, —to income-eligible seniors who wish to stay independent in the homes and communities they love.

New stairs and railings in Bucksport helped this resident to enter and exit her home safely and confidently.

"We’re honored to support aging Mainers in a way that promotes safety, dignity, and quality of life," said Sherry Billings, Executive Director of Hancock County Habitat for Humanity. "This work goes hand-in-hand with our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live."

In addition to support from MaineHousing, this initiative is made possible in part by grants from the Eastern Area Agency on Aging, Maine Community Foundation as well as funds from the Town of Bucksport, Bangor Savings Bank and a Pulliam Social Justice grant from the Castine Unitarian Universalist Church, allowing us to reach even more Hancock County residents in need.

By combining resources and partnerships, Hancock County Habitat is building more than homes—we’re helping build futures, one safe and accessible home at a time.

Volunteers Make a Difference

On May 15, we hosted our volunteer appreciation celebration at Strong's Public House in Sedgwick. It was an honor to acknowledge the volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to constructing Sonia's home and those who have supported our Community Aging in Place program. Without our volunteers, we could not fulfill our mission!

Two volunteers were honored with the Volunteer of the Year Awards. Each dedicated over 500 hours of service and assumed leadership roles within their programs, often coordinating tasks and volunteers at various job sites across the county. We are grateful to both of you, along with the other essential volunteers who help us enhance our communities by ensuring homes are safe and affordable.

We are forever grateful to all of our volunteers!
